Hockey at Laurel Hill Coláiste is back in full swing this year. Currently we have six different teams competing in Cup and League competitions.
Recently our top Senior team faced a strong Mountt Mercy squad and fell short in the Cup Semi-Final. Although the final score was 3-0, the girls tested Mount Mercy up until the very end and played with a lot of class.
Our second Senior team beat Villiers 2-1 on the 26th of January in the first round of their cup competition and will be facing Presentation Secondary School, Thurles on March 4th for the Senior C Munster Cup Quarter Final.
As for the younger teams, the Junior A squad lost 2-1 to a strong Mount Mercy team in the first round of the Cup on January 28th. After defeating Ursuline 2-0 in the play-in round and Rockwell 4-1 in the first round of the Munster Junior C Cup, the remaining Junior team will be moving onto the quarter finals where they will face Crescent Comp.
As for the Minor Squads, the Minor B’s lost to Villiers in the first round of their Cup competition. The Minor A team will be headed to Cork on the 15th to face Scoil Mhuire in the first round of the Minor Cup on the 15th of February.
There are roughly 60 first year students training every Tuesday and Thursday. Throughout the year they have been playing in 8 aside blitzes against other schools in the area. This year Munster has decided to start a 11 a side league for the first years which will allow them to compete for a trophy while playing proper sized hockey matches. Since September, the girls have improved immensely. This has a lot to do with their willingness to learn and consistent presence at hockey training, even when some of the sessions start at 7:30am.
Míle buíochas do Lizza for all of her work with the teams so far this year!
